How Does Shopify's ChatGPT Integration Work?

If your Shopify store sells to US customers, ChatGPT can find your products through Shopify Catalog, and Shopify charges no fee for the channel. Shopify moved checkout to your own store in March 2026, and your product data shapes whether ChatGPT recommends you.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify switches the ChatGPT channel on by default for eligible stores that sell to US customers, and charges no channel fee. You pay your standard payment processing fees.
  • Since March 2026, ChatGPT shoppers pay on your own store's checkout, inside ChatGPT's in-app browser on mobile or in a new tab on the web.
  • Eligibility needs US customers, products that meet Shopify Catalog rules, completed store policies and a record of genuine sales.
  • Shopify Catalog formats the product data you entered for AI agents. Shopify's own listing-quality tool scores products lower when descriptions, images or variants are thin.
  • Opting out is a five-step change in Sales channels > Agentic, and Shopify says your data can keep flowing for up to 7 days after you switch it off.

Shopify's ChatGPT integration runs through agentic storefronts, the set of AI sales channels Shopify switches on by default for eligible stores. If your store sells to customers in the United States, Shopify sends your products to ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, the feed it uses to pass product data to AI channels. A shopper who picks one of your products pays on your own store's checkout, which opens in ChatGPT's in-app browser on mobile or in a new tab on the web. Shopify charges no channel fee for ChatGPT sales. Its Help Center page for the channel says: "There are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT. You pay only your standard payment processing fees."

Eligibility gets your products into ChatGPT's results. Your product data shapes whether ChatGPT picks yours over the next store's. Shopify grades that data in a listing-quality tool inside your admin, and a store with two-line descriptions, one image per product and coded variant names scores low on it.

The March 2026 checkout change

In its first plan, Shopify kept the whole sale inside ChatGPT. In September 2025 it posted that merchants would sell through ChatGPT conversations with "no links or redirects", as Digital Commerce 360 reported on 17 March 2026. The same report carried the new plan from a Shopify representative: buyers find products in ChatGPT and "complete their purchase on the merchant's own online store". Orders land in your Shopify admin "like any other sales channel", and Shopify told the publication that merchants need no app to take part.

Shopify's Help Center page for ChatGPT, as of September 2026, describes the same setup. It calls ChatGPT "a product discovery channel", and your admin has no direct-checkout switch for it. Your checkout customisations, branding and payment methods carry over, because the sale happens on your checkout. If an article describes checkout inside ChatGPT or quotes a percentage fee per sale, check its date against March 2026 before you act on it.

Eligibility, and how to check it

Shopify's ChatGPT page sets four requirements:

  • Your store sells to customers in the United States. The business behind it can sit in another country.
  • Your products qualify for Shopify Catalog. Each product needs a title, at least one image and a price above zero. You have to publish it to your online store, and it can't carry Unlisted status or a hidden-from-search setting, according to Shopify's Catalog requirements.
  • You accept the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
  • Your policies are complete. That means your terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy, under Settings > Policies in your admin.

Catalog has account rules on top of the product rules. Shopify wants a store on the Starter plan or above, out of private mode, with "a track record of genuine sales to real customers" and low chargeback rates. A store with no orders can fail that test, and Shopify says a store "may lose Shopify Catalog eligibility" if it stops meeting the rules.

To check your status, open Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin. ChatGPT appears in that list with the other AI channels. You need to be the store owner, or a staff member with the Agentic permission, to see the section, per Shopify's guide to managing agentic storefronts.

The product data ChatGPT reads

Two rules on the ChatGPT page touch the listing itself. Keep any legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters of the product description. B2B-only products, and products on OpenAI's prohibited list, stay out of ChatGPT results.

Shopify's marketing page says Catalog "structures your product data so AI can find and surface your products". It structures what you give it. Catalog sends each channel your title, description, options, images, price and availability, per Shopify's product discovery page. If your title reads "Classic Tee" and the description runs to two lines, ChatGPT receives "Classic Tee" and two lines.

Shopify's listing-quality tool in the Agentic section shows how it judges a product. It scores description length, image count, verified reviews, variant completeness and store policies, and it flags variant names made of acronyms or numbers that agents struggle to read. We would work through the fields in this order:

FieldWhat to fix
TitleName the brand, the product type and the attribute people search by, such as size or material
DescriptionAnswer the questions a shopper would ask ChatGPT: who it suits, what it's made of, how it fits. Put legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters
Variants and optionsSpell out names such as "Navy / Large" in place of codes like "NV-L"
ImagesAdd more than one image per product. Shopify's tool counts them
Price and inventoryKeep them correct in Shopify. Catalog syncs them to each channel
ReviewsCollect verified reviews. Shopify counts reviews verified by trusted sources
Fields from Shopify's product discovery and listing-quality documentation. The fixes are Inferya's recommendations.

The other AI channels

ChatGPT is one channel among several in the Agentic section. Shopify's agentic storefronts overview lists Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta beside it. Those channels can offer direct checkout, where the shopper pays through a Shopify-powered checkout inside the AI app. Shopify's marketing page promises that shoppers "discover and buy without leaving the chat". On ChatGPT's mobile app, that means your own checkout opening in the in-app browser. On ChatGPT's website, your checkout opens in a new tab.

Google AI Mode and Gemini take your products from the Google & YouTube sales channel or Google Merchant Center, in place of Shopify Catalog. With the default "Allow Shopify to manage for me" setting on, Shopify enrols you in new AI channels as they launch. The product data fixes above carry over to these channels, since each one draws on your Shopify product records.

Turning it off

To remove ChatGPT, go to Sales channels > Agentic, switch off "Allow Shopify to manage for me", click ChatGPT, turn off Shopify Catalog access and click Save. Shopify warns that your data can keep flowing through Catalog for up to 7 days after you switch it off.

The switch covers the Catalog feed alone. ChatGPT can reach your products through web crawling, the same route Google uses. Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt has the reverse limit: it affects the open web and leaves the Catalog feed running. To keep a product out of AI results on both routes, Shopify's advice is to set it to Unlisted, which removes it from Google, your sitemap and your own store search.

Four jobs for this week

  • Confirm the channel is on. Open Sales channels > Agentic and check that ChatGPT has Shopify Catalog access.
  • Start with your 20 best sellers. Rewrite their titles and descriptions, spell out variant names and add images. Once they're done, run customer-style searches in the Agentic section's search preview tool. Shopify says each channel re-ranks results with its own logic, so read the preview as a direction.
  • Fill in missing policies. ChatGPT eligibility depends on your terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy.
  • Watch the channel's orders. Shopify shows AI orders in your admin "with channel or referrer attribution", and the Agentic section reports sales, orders, sessions and conversion for each channel.

Shopify's own advice for AI discoverability pairs complete product data with SEO best practices, and the two jobs overlap. Our SEO checklist for Shopify stores covers the search side. For a second pair of eyes on your product data, our Shopify development team runs this review, and The Watch Bazar shows the kind of online store we design, build and maintain.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify charge a fee for ChatGPT sales?

Shopify's Help Center says: "There are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT. You pay only your standard payment processing fees." If you read about a percentage fee per sale, check whether the article predates the March 2026 change to checkout.

Do I need an app to sell on ChatGPT?

You don't. Shopify told Digital Commerce 360 that the channel comes out of the box with Agentic Storefronts and needs no app installation. Shopify generates agents.md and llms.txt files for your store and says you don't need a third-party app for them.

Can customers check out inside ChatGPT?

They pay on your store's own checkout. ChatGPT opens it in its in-app browser on mobile and in a new tab on the web, so your branding, checkout customisations and payment methods stay in place. Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta can offer direct checkout inside the AI app. ChatGPT sends shoppers to your store.

Do I have to be in the US?

Your customers do. Shopify requires your store to sell to customers in the United States, and says your store can be based outside the US.

How do I stop my products showing in ChatGPT?

In Sales channels > Agentic, switch off "Allow Shopify to manage for me", click ChatGPT, turn off Shopify Catalog access and save. Shopify says the data can take up to 7 days to stop flowing. Web crawling gives ChatGPT a second route to your products, so Shopify's advice for full removal is Unlisted status, which hides the product from Google and from your store search.

Does this replace SEO?

It sits beside SEO. ChatGPT can find products through web crawling as well as through Shopify Catalog, and Shopify's guidance for AI discoverability names complete product data and SEO best practices in the same sentence. Clear titles and full descriptions help in Google and in ChatGPT.
